The United States has provided fresh clarification on the rules guiding its Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), explaining who qualifies for visa-free travel and the requirements travelers must meet before entering the country.
According to the US Department of State, travelers using the Visa Waiver Programme must first obtain approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before boarding any flight or sea vessel heading to the United States. The agency also noted that eligible travelers who prefer to have a visa stamped in their passport can still apply for a regular US visitor visa instead of using the ESTA system.
### Countries Eligible for the US Visa Waiver Programme
Citizens of the following countries are currently eligible to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme:- Andorra- Australia- Austria- Belgium- Brunei- Chile- Croatia- Czech Republic- Denmark- Estonia- Finland- France- Germany- Greece- Hungary- Iceland- Ireland- Israel- Italy- Japan- Latvia- Liechtenstein- Lithuania- Luxembourg- Malta- Monaco- Netherlands- New Zealand- Norway- Poland- Portugal- Qatar- San Marino- Singapore- Slovakia- Slovenia- South Korea- Spain- Sweden- Switzerland- Taiwan- United Kingdom
### Passport Requirements
To qualify for visa-free travel, applicants must possess an electronic passport (e-passport) that contains an embedded microchip and meets international security standards. The passport requirement applies to every traveler, including children, infants, and individuals traveling with temporary or emergency passports.
### Who Is Not Eligible?
The US government also stated that some travelers may lose their eligibility for the Visa Waiver Programme based on their travel history or dual nationality. Individuals who have traveled to or resided in certain restricted countries, including Cuba, Iran, Iraq, or Sudan, cannot use the ESTA system. Instead, they are required to apply for a standard US visa and attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate before traveling. The updated guidance is aimed at helping international travelers understand the requirements before making travel arrangements and ensuring they meet all necessary conditions for entry into the United States.
